The Jewish Yoga Network welcomes guest author Dani Antman, whose new book Wired for God is now available.

“What are the odds of an ordinary Jewish girl from Queens, NY meeting a realized Indian Master from Rishikesh, India, steeped in the knowledge of yoga, Vedanta, Kundalini Science and, most surprisingly, the Jewish mystical path of Kabbalah? Well, I would say pretty slim!” – Wired for God, Adventures of a Jewish Yogi by Dani Antman

Growing up, I had an ambivalent relationship to Judaism. The services I attended never inspired me, and when I started my search for a spiritual path, I turned to the teachings of Yoga. It wasn’t until I started to study Kabbalah, the Jewish mystical tradition, that my interest in Judaism was rekindled.

I was introduced to the teachings of Kabbalah, the Jewish mystical path, through a teacher and healer named Jason Shulman. Jason invented a way to use the sefirot, the ten Divine emanations of the Tree of Life as a modality for healing and awakening. When I started A Society of Souls, (ASOS), his four-year training in Kabbalistic Healing, the Jewish mystical teachings spoke to my soul and felt familiar. I was astonished to find everything in my own tradition that I had looked for elsewhere: meditation, spiritual philosophy, chanting, and self-inquiry.

Kabbalistic teachings explore the nature of God, suffering, and nondual spiritual awakening. My work as a Kabbalistic healer and teacher at ASOS gave me a sense of satisfaction, purpose, and community. My clients often reported a profound transformation in their lives, and I knew this work was effective.

However, after many years of working as a healer and teacher, I found myself feeling burned out, physically exhausted, and spiritually uninspired. I had all the outer trappings of success: I was a senior teacher at ASOS, I had a steady stream of clients, a new house and a great community. However, I knew something wasn’t right – I had hit a plateau, and I wasn’t finding the help I sought from my teacher. The thought of leaving the community terrified me, yet I yearned for spiritual guidance more than the comfort of my current position.

One night I prayed for help, asking for a teacher who could lead me to self-realization. My prayers were answered just a few weeks later, when I met a realized Swami from Rishikesh, India, Swamiji Chandrasekharanand Saraswati. He specialized in Kundalini Vidya, the knowledge the divine feminine force of awakening, called Kundalini. Kundalini is the force within every human being that when awakened, leads to self-realization.

Imagine my surprise when he told me that I had a challenging Kundalini rising due to a Jewish past life in which I had had a tragic fall from grace. He attributed my fatigue and burnout to a weakened energy system, and under his direction, I received yogic practices combined with Hebrew names of God, which healed and repaired my subtle body. As I did my practices, I had profound inner experiences that connected me to the Jewish lineage and God. During a period of twelve years of intense and dedicated practice, I healed my ambivalent relationship to Judaism, and experienced the Tree of Life within me as the roadmap to higher consciousness.

I hope my story will serve as a gentle guide for other seekers, both Jewish and non-Jewish. I have encountered many challenges on the spiritual path, which are universal in nature: a healing crisis, misplaced trust, loss, and divorce. Barbara Brennan, my first healing teacher, used to say, “Every person that comes to you, even if their complaint is a pain in their big toe, is really searching for God.” I know this to be true: all our challenges eventually lead us home.
Every spiritual tradition has its methods of preparing the seeker to be a fit vehicle for self-realization. This is how we are all Wired for God.

I wrote my book to give inspiration to all sincere seekers looking to make real spiritual progress and find their own unique spiritual path.
